Home Energy Score

The Pilot Period for the Home Energy Score Has Closed.

Click here for an online update from the Department of Energy on the Home Energy Score Pilot.

The Department of Energy created the Home Energy Score as a quick way for homeowners to learn how to save energy and money and to understand how their home's energy performance compared to that of other homes in the same region. Along with the Score came customized recommendations for energy upgrades as well as an estimate of how much these improvements can reduce utility bills.

DOE worked with a number of communities, states, and utilities across the country to serve as testing locations for the program through June 15, 2011. LEAP administered the pilot for our area of Central Virginia. We will keep our residents posted on any updates from DOE on when the Home Energy Score will be available again. If you have not done so already, sign up for LEAP's newsletter so you can be in the know!

The following certified building analysts were approved by DOE to offer the Home Energy Score in LEAP's pilot:

Key facts about the Home Energy Score

The Home Score reflects how much energy your home needs plus any additional energy needed to get the energy to the house.

  • The Score provides a comparison between your scored home and houses of similar size in your area.

  • The Score does factor in your climate. For example, a house in Charlottesville that uses twice as much energy than one in San Diego may have the same score since it takes more energy to heat and cool homes in harsher environments.

  • The Score is not meant to replace a comprehensive home energy assessment, which would also look at the home’s health, safety and durability issues.  Learn more about the differences between the two.
